Lake Elementaita and the ridge known as the Sleeping Warrior, seen from a cliff above the shore

Lake Elementaita

Lake Elementaita is a shallow, salty lake beside the Nairobi–Nakuru highway, between Gilgil and Nakuru. Together with Lakes Nakuru and Bogoria it forms the Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its shores are home to flamingos, pelicans and a handful of quiet lodges and camps.

Why visit

Elementaita is the quiet one of the Rift Valley lakes. Smaller and shallower than Nakuru, it is fed by hot springs at its southern end, and when conditions are right its pale water fills with lesser and greater flamingos. On its eastern side rises a ridge whose outline looks like a man lying on his back, known as the Sleeping Warrior. Much of the western shore belongs to Soysambu Conservancy, a large private ranch with zebras, buffalo and Rothschild’s giraffes.

What to see and do

  • The viewpoints: lay-bys along the highway give a wide view over the lake and the Sleeping Warrior.
  • Birds: flamingos, pelicans, avocets and other waders on the shallows, depending on the season and water levels.
  • Lakeside lodges: walks along the shore, sundowners and quiet nights away from the city.
  • Kariandusi: one of East Africa’s oldest stone-tool sites, a few minutes up the road.

Getting there

Elementaita lies just off the A104 Nairobi–Nakuru highway, about 40 minutes from Nakuru and 2½ hours from Nairobi. The lodges and camps can arrange transfers and game drives.
