Why Nakuru County?

The Rift Valley at its most varied

Few places in Kenya pack so much into a short drive: a rhino sanctuary, three World Heritage lakes nearby, volcanoes and a freshwater lake full of hippos.

Spend a morning tracking rhinos and Rothschild’s giraffes at Lake Nakuru, watch the sun set over Menengai Crater, take a boat among the hippos of Lake Naivasha, cycle past zebras in Hell’s Gate and walk the rim of Mount Longonot, all within a couple of hours of each other.

We help you choose the right tours and safaris, find a good place to stay and get more out of every day.

Visiting Nakuru County: your questions answered

Is NakuruCounty.com the official website of Nakuru County?

No. NakuruCounty.com is an independent travel guide. We are not the County Government of Nakuru, Kenya Wildlife Service, a tourism board or a tour operator. When you book a tour through our links, you book with our partner Viator and the tour operator, who handle your booking, changes and refunds.

Where is Nakuru County?

Nakuru County is in the Great Rift Valley in central Kenya. Its capital, Nakuru city, is about 160 km north-west of Nairobi, and the county stretches south to Lake Naivasha, Hell’s Gate and Mount Longonot. See getting there.

What is Nakuru County known for?

For Lake Nakuru National Park and its rhinos, giraffes and flamingos, for the Rift Valley lakes of Elementaita and Naivasha, and for volcanic landscapes such as Menengai Crater, Hell’s Gate and Mount Longonot. See Lake Nakuru National Park.

How many days do I need?

One day is enough for a game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park. Three days let you add Menengai, Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate, and four or five days include Mount Longonot and Lake Bogoria. Start with our three-day itinerary.

When is the best time to visit?

The dry seasons, from late June to October and from January to February, are best for game drives, hiking and cycling. The long rains (about March to May) and the short rains (about November) make some tracks muddy, but the land is green and there are fewer visitors. See the best time to visit.

Is Nakuru County safe to visit?

Most visits are trouble-free. Take normal care in towns, especially after dark, avoid driving at night, and follow your guide’s advice in the parks. Check your government’s travel advice before you go. See our travel guide.
