Lorries on the road carved into the green escarpment of the Rift Valley

Getting from Nairobi to Nakuru: car, shuttle, bus and matatu

  • 1 min read

Nakuru is about 160 km north-west of Nairobi, and almost everyone travels by road. The drive is part of the experience: the highway climbs out of the city, then drops down the escarpment into the Great Rift Valley, with one of the most famous views in Kenya.

The route

The A104 highway runs from Nairobi through Limuru, then down the escarpment to the valley floor. It passes Naivasha, Gilgil and Lake Elementaita before reaching Nakuru. On the way down, stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint for the view across the valley to Mount Longonot.

  • Nairobi to Naivasha: about 90 km, around 2 hours
  • Nairobi to Nakuru: about 160 km, around 3–3½ hours
  • From the airport: add 30 to 60 minutes to cross Nairobi

Your options

Private driver or transfer

The most comfortable choice, especially from the airport. You can stop at the viewpoint and at Lake Elementaita, and many drivers double as safari guides.

Shared shuttles

Shuttle companies run minibuses between Nairobi and Nakuru many times a day, from offices in central Nairobi. They are cheap, fairly comfortable and leave when full or at set times.

Buses and matatus

Buses and matatus are the cheapest way to travel and run constantly along the highway. They can be crowded and are driven fast, so keep your bags close.

Matatus, brightly painted minibuses, link every town along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway.

Self-drive

Possible if you are confident on busy roads. Kenya drives on the left. A 4×4 is useful in the national parks, especially after rain.

Road safety

  • Avoid driving after dark, when lorries and unlit vehicles make the highway dangerous.
  • Expect heavy traffic leaving Nairobi and around Naivasha on Friday and Sunday evenings.
  • Watch for speed bumps, police checks and slow lorries on the escarpment.

Once you arrive

Lake Nakuru National Park’s Main Gate is a few minutes from the city centre. See getting there and getting around and our where to stay guide.
