Mount Longonot rising above farmland and trees in the Rift Valley

Volcano

Mount Longonot

Mount Longonot is a dormant volcano rising to 2,776 metres above the floor of the Rift Valley, south-east of Lake Naivasha. A steep trail climbs to its crater rim, and from there a path circles a deep, forested crater, with views over the lake, Hell’s Gate and the valley walls.

Why visit

Longonot is one of the most rewarding day hikes within reach of Nairobi. The volcano last erupted in the nineteenth century, and its crater, about 1.8 kilometres across, is now filled with forest, with steam vents on its walls. From the rim you can see Lake Naivasha, the Mau escarpment, Hell’s Gate and, on clear days, far across the Rift Valley.

The hike

  • To the rim: from the park gate, a track and then a steep path on loose volcanic ash climb about 600 metres, with a couple of resting points.
  • Around the crater: the rim path is narrow and rough in places, and it climbs to the summit on the far side before dropping back.
  • Distance and time: about 13 km for the whole hike, usually 4 to 6 hours.
  • Wildlife: you may see zebras, giraffes and gazelles on the lower slopes.

Tips

  • Start early to avoid the midday heat, and carry at least 2 litres of water per person. There is none on the mountain.
  • Wear shoes with good grip; the ash is slippery on the way down.
  • Do not try to go down into the crater.
